Surrounded on one side by rainforest mountain ranges and the other by the sparkling Coral Sea. Cairns is the heart of Northern Queensland. Gateway to adventures on the Great Barrier Reef and in the World Heritage Rainforest. The wet season, November to April has box jellyfish in the waters, along with both salt and freshwater crocodiles. The dry season, May to November is the most popular time to visit. The jelly fish do not bother you on an island, so during the wet season this is something to keep in mind. ![]() If you want to experience a real adventure, or the outback, visit the Cape York Peninsula only accessible during the dry season. These guided tours are steeped in aboriginal culture, bird and wildlife viewing. This top end region is fantastic for big game fishing with record Marlin and Barramundi fish. You can do anything in this region. The accommodations in Cairns, Port Douglas and Palm Cove are excellent with several outstanding spas.
