Two wonderful train journeys are the Ghan, which runs from Adelaide to Alice Springs  24 hours, and then to Darwin.

You travel into the heart of the continent. A hundred and fifty years ago the first camels where imported along with their handlers from Afghanistan, and in true Aussie style, the name was shortened to Ghan.

The Ghan by Beau Wade 

Sleep on the train, wonderful meals, and you travel thru a waste red centre  the soil is the color of cayenne pepper. Go Gold Kangaroo service, which gives you a sleeper. Only goes twice a week, to Alice Springs and once a week continuing on to Darwin.

The leg of the journey to Darwin is new. There are 29 different kinds of termites in the Northern Territory so building the rail lines wasnt easy.

The Indian Pacific Railroad

The Indian Pacific is an ocean to ocean experience. Sydney and the Pacific Ocean to Perth on the Indian Ocean. It is one of the worlds longest train journeys, 75 hours. Only goes twice a week. You go thru the Blue Mountains to the vastest of the treeless plains of the Nullarbor which is the longest straight stretch of track in the world. It stops at fascinating places, like an outpost named Cook, population 2.
