Nelson offers more geographical diversity than almost any other region in New Zealand. It is unique because it has three wonderful National Parks nearby with very different landscapes from mountains, lakes and beech forests to golden sand beaches and turquoise waters.
There is an awesome range of outdoor activities too sea kayaking, rock climbing, white water rafting, mountain biking, nature tours, sailing, golf, horse trekking, four wheel motorbiking, sky wire, fishing charters and scalloping (in season) seal swim, multi day hikes, guided walks, birdwatching and skiing, heli-sightseeing, skydiving just to name a few. Most activities are within 1-2 hours drive, allowing visitors to fit more into every day. A year round favorable climate with the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand means every season brings a new reason to visit the region. ![]() Nelson is known for its artists colony, with over 350 of them to visit from potters, to knitters. You can do a gallery and workshops tour. The Saturday market is worth a visit. Great shopping in the town. Great place for all kinds of great food, and l8 bouquet wineries to visit. It is known for its greenlipped mussels and sea food. The Coastal Walk thru Abel Tasman National Park is world famous, and takes 3-5 days.
